"Choice and control" is one of those phrases that gets used so often in the disability sector that it can start to sound like a slogan rather than a promise. But for the people it's meant to serve, it's not abstract at all — it's the difference between a support system that works for you and one that simply happens to you.
At CareMax Disability, choice and control isn't a value we put on a poster. It's the operating principle behind every roster, every care plan and every conversation we have with participants and families across Canberra and Queanbeyan.
Under the NDIS, choice and control is meant to give participants the power to decide who supports them, when, how and for what purpose — rather than being slotted into whatever a provider happens to have available. In practice, that means things like:
It sounds simple. In reality, a lot of participants tell us it's the exception rather than the rule.
We hear the same frustrations again and again from people who've used other providers: support workers who change without warning, schedules built around staff convenience rather than participant need, and care plans that feel copied-and-pasted from someone else's file.
None of this happens because providers set out to ignore people's wishes. It usually comes down to scale — large organisations managing hundreds of participants through call centres simply can't give every person the individual attention choice and control requires.
Being a locally owned, Canberra-based provider means we're small enough to actually know the people we support — not just their file number. That shows up in a few concrete ways:
Whether you work with CareMax or another provider, here are a few things that genuinely help participants take more ownership of their NDIS journey:
Choice and control was written into the NDIS for a reason: because disability support works best when the person at the centre of it is actually steering. That's the standard we hold ourselves to every day — and it's the standard we think every participant in Canberra and Queanbeyan deserves to expect.
